Oulu: The Final Chapter of European Capital of Culture Year – When the North Comes Alive

Oulu2026

As 2026 draws to an end, Oulu’s year as European Capital of Culture enters its final, spectacular chapter. From immersive digital art and Northern Lights to world-class music, light festivals and Christmas magic, the final months of Oulu2026 offer a unique reason to experience the North now.

One of the most unusual experiences is Kuutar Garden, where Danish artist Jakob Kudsk Steensen transforms an underground space in Kivisydän into an immersive digital landscape inspired by northern nature and disappearing ecosystems. The experience continues until the end of November.

In the beginning of October, the new Tiima Museum and Science Centre opens in the heart of Oulu. Its opening exhibitions explore two very different sides of the North: the history and culture of metal music and the science and stories behind the Northern Lights.

Then in November, Oulu lights up. Lumo Art & Tech Festival, 13–22 November, brings together light art, music, digital experiences and technology across the city. One of the highlights is Björk, whose audiovisual works will be presented in Oulu as part of the festival. The much-loved Lumo Light Festival, 19–22 November, will once again transform the city into an open-air gallery of light.

Music takes visitors even further north – and even further into space. Beyond the Sky, performed by Oulu Sinfonia in November, combines orchestral music with spectacular astrophotography by J-P Metsävainio, creating an immersive journey through the universe.

And finally, December brings a very special finale. Snowball, a brand-new Christmas musical, has its world premiere in Oulu on 4 December. Set in a magical northern world of Christmas and Northern Lights, the production brings together a large Finnish cast, Oulu Sinfonia and an international creative team.

As the nights grow darker, Oulu is preparing to shine brighter than ever.
