The five sites in Helsinki, included in the Aalto Works application are not the only sites in Helsinki that bear the handprint of Alvar Aalto and his wives, Aino and Elissa Aalto. Helsinki has around 20 buildings or other sites designed by Aalto. Many these sites can also be explored from the inside. In fact, Helsinki is one of the most notable hubs of Alvar Aalto’s architecture. The city is proud to have such a significant concentration of their work. Visit Alvar Aalto Helsinki

Visions of Alvar Aalto -Finlandia Exhibition

The House of Culture reflects Aalto’s vision of architecture as a tool for bringing people together. It was completed in 1958, and the building continues to host concerts, performances and cultural events, just as it has for decades.  More information

National Pensions Institute (The Social Insurance Institution of Finland KELA) Head Office is close to the centre of Helsinki. The richly nuancedly monumental main building represents the best of Aalto’s office buildings. National Pensions Institute was designed for Finland’s growing welfare state, transforming a government office into a welcoming environment filled with daylight, courtyards and carefully planned public spaces. The building (1953-1956) is still in its original use as offices and not open for public. Guided tours are not available for the time being. More information

Discover Aalto’s Helsinki

For people interested in Aalto’s architecture, a good tip is to hop on tram number 4, as it passes several important Aalto sites: It travels from the district of Katajanokka, which features Enso-Gutzeit’s ‘Sugar Cube’ building, past the Rautatalo building in the city centre and onto the main thoroughfare of Mannerheimintie past Finlandia Hall and Kela’s headquarters, heading west to the district of Munkkiniemi, where the Aalto House and Studio Aalto are located.
