Jakobstad – A new coastal destination for Cruise Guests

Jakobstad (Pietarsaari in Finnish) is an emerging cruise destination on Finland’s scenic west coast, now open to international cruise calls. This picturesque seaside town offers Baltic cruise guests a unique day experience filled with maritime heritage. The town breaths Nordic culture, and small-town charm – all close to the port of Jakobstad.

One of Jakobstad’s most captivating attractions is Skata, the largest preserved wooden house district in Finland. With its colorful 18th- and 19th-century architecture and peaceful, narrow streets, it provides an authentic glimpse into traditional Finnish life.

Rich maritime history

Jakobstad has a rich maritime history that comes alive in its Old Harbour, where historic trade routes once flourished. Visitors can explore the Malm Museum, housed in one of the town’s oldest estates, and learn about Jakobstad’s legacy in shipbuilding and global export of tar, timber, and tobacco during the 1800s.

Another highlight is Nanoq – The Arctic Museum, a rare cultural experience in Northern Europe. This unique open-air museum showcases the life of Arctic explorers and indigenous Arctic communities, making it a memorable stop for travelers interested in polar history and adventure.

Nature excursions are a key part of Jakobstad’s offering. The Fäboda coastal area, just a short drive from the town center, features pristine beaches, forest trails, and stunning views over the Gulf of Bothnia. It is ideal for hiking, photography, or a peaceful seaside break.

Visitors can also enjoy Aspegrens Garden, a historic parsonage garden with traditional horticulture. Near by in the city center is the School garden covering over 1,35 hectars.

Jakobstad’s food and café culture adds to the experience. Cruise guests can relax in atmospheric cafés, taste locally roasted coffee, have a taste of locally brewed beers, or dine on Nordic-inspired meals made with seasonal ingredients from the region.

Compact, welcoming, and full of character, Jakobstad is a perfect day port of call for Baltic Sea cruise itineraries. It offers cruise lines and tour operators a fresh, authentic alternative that combines heritage, culture, nature, and a truly local experience – all in a highly walkable setting.
